Hey guys, we got back from Summer Holidays to find our inbox inundated with referrals from social agencies begging for volunteers to help their families!

Our gathering in October of this year was a unique expression of who City Lights is becoming. We had lots of volunteers do lots of projects, everything from a craft group at Bethany Centre for young mums to weeding and painting for foster caregivers and renovating the Maori mission… and more! We delivered food parcels and had community fun-days. It was cool to see some churches come up with their own projects in and around their communities and serve those on the day! We really hope this happens more often!

After gathering together on the friday night and hearing a stirring and strong word from Brooke Turner about the importance of our faith becoming action and not just talk, we met up in the city and south on Saturday morning and moved into our various projects. It was such an honour to work alongside some of the teams that we did including Mark and Sarah at the United Maori Mission who gave a powerful ministry with kids in South Auckland when God called them to move into town to live-in and care for young maori students who would come to Auckland from all of the nation to study. They needed to get the place up to standard and with limited resources, City Lights was exactly what they needed. We hope to work with these awesome people again!!

Our next gathering will be 11th and 12th of March, 2011, stay tuned for more details.

These guys get referrals from police, CYFs, and all sorts of some of the most at-risk kids, but kids they see as having incredible potential… if someone would just give them some time and let them know that someone is crazy about them. That’s all they need, ONE PERSON. Could that person be you?

After City Lights Gathering this year in March we put out the challenge to churches to take up the torch of learning to bless and serve the community and get creative with their Sunday. Urban Vineyard in Newton took up that challenge and invited men and women from all of the Lodges around Auckland CBD to come to church on Sunday for a church lunch, can you believe it, they actually came!! And they’ve been coming ever since (true story).

Have a read of our friend and City Lights Central coordinator, Wade’s blog on what he encountered the Sunday morning he picked up some of his new friends from the lodge for church.
